Ingersoll Rand Introduces MR150 Dedicated Man Rider® Winch with Advanced, Fully-Integrated Safety Features

New winch is beyond tough with durable materials and components that hold up in harsh environments of onshore and offshore oil drilling

Davidson, N.C., – Today, Ingersoll Rand (NYSE:IR) introduced the new MR150 Man Rider® Winch that integrates all the best safety and durability features of Ingersoll Rand’s lifting technology as standard features in a single compact package. The MR150 has built-in safety mechanisms including a slack line prevention system and an emergency lowering system, as well as a number of intuitive design elements that help rig workers protect themselves and co-workers during operation. The MR150 is bolstered with stainless steel components and marine-grade paint to reduce corrosion and withstand harsh environments.

Seven percent of U.S. oil worker fatalities in recent years were caused by falls from higher to lower levels[1]. Many injuries and fatalities are preventable by using proper personnel lifting techniques and equipment. The MR150 includes the most built-in safety features of any of Ingersoll Rand’s dedicated Man Rider winches:

-        Slack Line Prevention System - If the winch line gets caught or snagged, the slack line prevention system on the MR150 immediately shuts down operation of the winch, stopping the winch from turning out more line and helping to prevent the rider from falling. The slack arm sits only four inches from the winch drum, providing more clearance for equipment above and reducing the footprint the winch takes up on the deck of the rig, where space is at a premium.

-        Emergency Lowering System - The fully-integrated emergency lowering system utilizes its own air storage tank so that in the case of power loss, there is enough air for a controlled descent of the worker on the line. The air storage tank is mounted under the drum of the winch protecting it from incidental contact and holds enough air to release the brakes and lower the worker a maximum distance of 150 feet. In the event that main air pressure is lost and the emergency lowering system is engaged, draining the stored air, the air storage tank is replenished when the winch receives power again.

-        Redundant Braking - Automatic multidisc and drum brakes create a redundant braking system. With the drum braking system, force is applied to the drum to stop the rotating. The automatic disc brakes operate directly on the gear set to slow the system. 

-        Overload Protection Device - The overload protection device triggers the winch to automatically shut off when it detects a load that exceeds the 150 kg (330 lbs.) rating for the winch.

-        Main Air Emergency Stop Button - In case of an emergency, the operator can shut down all operation of the winch with the push of one button. In the event the button is engaged, reset steps are required to power the winch back on and engage the throttle lever again.

 

Intuitive Design Takes Human Factors into Consideration

Detailed design considerations have been mindfully included in the MR150 to help operators protect themselves and the individual on the end of the line from accidental lifting or lowering.

-        Upper and Lower Limit Switches – These switches protect the rider from being raised or lowered past set limits. These settings can be customized by the operator to adapt for use on different rigs. For protection from the elements or accidental activation, the switches are located inside of the winch drum.

-        Variable Speed Lever - For precise control, the variable-speed throttle lever is designed to “lift and shift” for optimal control and to ensure that rope will not keep hauling out or pulling in if the operator lets go of the lever, as the lever automatically shifts to neutral when not being controlled.

-        Operator Orientation Cover – This optional feature provides an awning over the Man Rider components and lever that orientates the operator in the correct position relative to the lever for lifting or lowering.

 

Motor and Systems Built Beyond Tough to Endure Harsh Environments

The winch is air-operated and built around a precision variable speed motor supported with integrated systems that keep the motor running well despite harsh conditions ranging from sand, wind, cold temperatures and salty, moisture-ridden air. An integrated water separator protects the motor by filtering out moisture from the air before it enters the motor cavity. The filter, regulator and lubricator keep components clean and running smoothly, as well as minimize corrosion.

Durable materials encase the essential internal and external components of the MR150. Stainless steel uprights, stainless steel and brass fittings and hoses made of braided stainless steel and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) are used throughout the construction of the winch to protect it against corrosion. Carbo zinc sand-blasted steel guards are coated in marine-grade paint and protect external features, such as the throttle lever, water separator, filter and lubricator, on either side of the winch.

Now standard, the MR150 meets CE and Atmosphere Explosives (ATEX) Zone 1 regulations for operation in hazardous environments. Optional approvals are available for American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
